Nanometer is one-billionth part (10-9) of a meter. To give a perspective of how small this is – the diameter of average human hair is 10,000 nanometers! Nanotechnology refers to the ability to synthesis, manipulate and characterize matter at size of 100nanometer or less.
High-tech companies/ research institutes world over are working on Nanotechnology and billions of dollars are being pumped in for research and development work in Nanotechnology. Nanodevices and nanoelectronics are farther off, perhaps 5-15 years, and will have applications in medical treatments and diagnostics, faster computers, and in sensors.
